People ask me why Sarah is always tagged as Sarah P (when no one else has their initial in their tag). The answer is this joke. I've been planning on doing a Fake Sarah joke since the day I introduced Sarah Park into the comic.

This is news to me now. I didn’t know Sarah P. was Asian. That’s pretty cool.

Her last name is “Park” — that’s like the second most Korean last name someone can have 😛

Honestly it doesn’t sound Korean to me. I guess maybe I’m little rascist myself but I always thought Korean names were like Wang, Kong, Yang, Wok. I don’t know Park just sounds more like a typical last name of anyone of any ethnic background.

…Langland, next time you say “Maybe I’m a little racist” think about what you say next.

      Let’s break this down —

      Wang is Chinese.

Yang and Kong CAN be Korean, but are much more common in China (although Kang is not uncommon in Korea).

And Wok is a Chinese cooking utensil dude. I’m not aware of anyone having that as a surname.

The top three Korean surnames are (in order of commonness) Kim, Lee, and Park. Those three surnames literally make up nearly half of all Koreans.

What about Park Chung-hee, the South Korean president who was really a dictator but was on friendly terms with the US because he wasn’t a communist?

Or, to be a bit nicer, the CURRENT president of South Korea Park Geun-hye (the first woman President of South Korea).

Or, to go Korean American — actress Grace Park of Battlestar Galactica and Hawaii Five-0. Or Linda Park of Star Trek: Enterprise.

Or Steve Park, the stand-up comic and In Living Color cast member. Park Chung-hee was just the first to come to mind for me because i recently took a Korean Culture course and that guy was mentioned a lot.

By the way I do recall in No Brand’s schedule they had full names on their wall of people who have to work what.

Depends on the Workforce head. I used to use just first names and nicknames when I did the scheduling back in the day

It’s possible for Sarah Park to go by a nickname, but with events so far, Racist Sarah gets the short end of the stick.
Typically in such situations, I’d let the two work it out between themselves. But as mentioned, everyone has their own way of doing things.

I haven’t explained this yet, but since Sarah Park is also staff, her shifts are preprinted on the master schedule unlike the volunteers.

    Bill can sympathize.
Also, too bad Max didn’t take a page out of Professor River Song’s book of name differentiation…

  • Every Time I Say My Desk is 'Peak' Cyberpunk, I End Up Topping It ( November 30th 2020 )

    My current desk

So every few years I've felt the need to make an update about my ever evolving workspace, and how I (more and more) seem to be cultivating an aesthetic that screams "secondary side character in a cyberpunk story who probably gets killed off in the third act." It's an aesthetic I've been working on on purpose (well, not the getting killed off bit), but every time I declare it's reached "peak cyberpunk" I end up outdoing it soon after anyway.

Like that 2017 update? I exceeded it in mere months.

Anyway, since I made some significant changes recently, I thought I'd post an update about my weird hole of many screens where I run The Nerd & Tie Podcast Network from. I'm not going to run through everything, but I will map out the biggest differences from 2017. The first is (obviously) the 32" display up top, which I now use to stream media on instead of the Kindle Fire (though the Kindle Fire is still used for audio bumpers on podcasts). An Apple TV runs that, though I also have a spare Switch dock hooked up sometimes. The Linux laptop is gone (I mean I still have it though), replaced by the late-2011 13" MacBook Pro which used to be my main personal machine. That MacBook Pro is tucked away, but displays on the relocated black monitor in the lower left.

Of course, my new main personal machine is a brand spankin' new M1 Mac mini, which is controlled by the keyboard and trackpad that sit where my laptop used to be. I've expanded the physical desk (and retired the mini fridge) to support the monitor for the Mac mini. And don't worry, Linux isn't gone from my desk (and I mean I still use the laptop) -- as you will notice one last monitor on the lower right which is hooked up to a Raspberry Pi 400. This is notably used from a different chair, as that's my "goof around" computer, and would literally be a distraction if I was trying to use it while getting work done.

It's funny, I bought two computers in 2020, both of which are ARM based. With a good chunk of my desk now on RISC architecture, I'm happy I can just dig out this image without context as I sign off for today...

    RISC is good

Note: While it’s true that many things are based on actual events, the characters contained within this strip are not meant to be direct analogs for actual people. They are not based off of people living, dead, or undead and any resemblance is coincidental. Nor are they based off of Ferrets.

Because that would be weird.
